Dialogues With Myself Personal Essays on Mormon Experience
Published in Paperback by Signature Books (June, 1984)
Author: Eugene England
Average review score:

An excellent book-too bad it's out of print
I read this book many years ago and it remains one of my favorites. Eugene England's insights on the Mormon experience are frank and insightful and I found the essays very enlightening. His essay on the issue of opening the priesthood to all worthy men is the best and most honest effort to make some sense of the issue that I have ever read. Alas, I lent my copy to a friend and never saw it again.

Disciples and the Bible: A History of Disciples Biblical Interpretation in North America
Published in Paperback by Chalice Press (January, 1998)
Author: M. Eugene Boring
Average review score:

An exploration of Restoration hermeneutics
"Disciples and the Bible" helps fill a gap in understanding hermeneutical history in the Restoration movement. Boring's book is useful in understanding the "how's" and "why's" of doctrinal "development" in Restoration thinking. For those in the Church of Christ and Christian Church branches of the Restoration movement, the book is less helpful (by Boring's admission). The main focus centres on the Disciples of Christ, and after the various splits in the movement, less attention is given to the other streams. Do not let the 500+ pages overly impress you, as the type set is rather large (making the reading easier, but meaning there is less to read). At times, the book comes across as a compilation of book reviews, as Boring examines some of the notable Restoration scholars and their works. This is a part of his purpose in tracing Restoration biblical interpretation. There seems to not be a great deal of attention given to the content of sermons in the five generations of the Restoration movement. Boring recognizes that this would be another means of approaching the topic, and that it would be a daunting task. Boring leaves you hungry for more, which is not a bad thing. The book is filled with headings, subheadings and a substantial bibliography which should prove helpful to further independent research.

Doggie Delights & Kitty Cuisine: Taste-Tested by Cinnamon
Published in Paperback by Bow Wow Books (September, 1902)
Authors: Martha Z. Ward and Eugene Malasics
Average review score:

easy, delightful doggie & cat treats
As a patry chef I think this book is excellent, easy to follow, if the person doesn't have experience baking they don't need to worry it shows step by step everything they need including ingredients, utensils, how to bake the treats, storage, and places where you can get some of the uncommon ingredients. The only thing the I think the author missed out in showing the final product with pictures, so we can see the final product in a full consistency. But if you like to eat a good cookie for yourself just think the your dog or cat they would to, and this book will show you how.

The Eagles of Savoy: The House of Savoy the Thirteenth-Century Europe.
Published in Textbook Binding by Princeton Univ Pr (August, 1974)
Author: Eugene L. Cox
Average review score:

Best thing available on this family, in any language
Thomas, Count of Savoy, died in 1233 a relatively obscure nobleman -- but his seven sons and two daughters rose to fame, fortune, and involvement in almost every international conflict in western Europe during the next fifty years. From Scotland to Sicily, they gained access to and marriage within every important royal house in Europe. Observed Joseph Bedier, "They did not pride themselves upon their own prowess, but upon their lineage, and each of them rejoiced to contemplate in the others, as in so many mirrors, his own image multiplied."

This is a very powerful experience. It brings you into not just the surface action but the thoughts and feelings of a serial killer, and the cop who tracks him down. A very good, thought provoking read. Well worth it.

Elementary Grammar: A Child's Resource Book (Using Your Language)
Published in Paperback by Grayson Bernard Pub (November, 1991)
Authors: Carl B. Smith and Eugene W. Reade
Average review score:

Good homeschooling resource
Schools--whether public or homeschools-- don't tend to focus on grammar because I suspect most parents are as afraid of it and mystified by it as are their students. But this book is a wonderful resource for homeschoolers, or for parents who want their kids to know more about grammar than they are learning at school.

We are homeschoolers who have borrowed, and are now buying, this book because it provides such clear, easy-to follow grammar lessons. It is geared toward elementary-aged kids. New readers will need some help with the lessons, but with mom or dad working alongside they do make sense. Good readers (at the 3rd grade level, at least)can work on the assignments alone.

The lessons are one or two pages long, written in large print, and usually focus on one grammar rule at a time. Each one builds upon the other. There is some review so that the kids don't forget what they've learned. It is not written in stilted language-- it's easy and even fun to read.

My son, who had never done any grammar homework per se, groaned when I announced we would be working on this stuff. But when he started doing the work, he said, "Wow, this isn't so bad!" As someone who faked their way through grammar classes in high school, I look forward to learning along with my children.

Encyclopedia of Terrarium
I thought the book was well worth the money. I found it in the library. I am trying to purchase this book myself. Currently the book is out of print. (real shame!) The pictures are first rate. The book provides excellent reading. The reptile pics were just unbelievable. I rated this book a 4. If it had more terrarium ideas, and displays I would of rated the book a 5.

Eugene Atget: Paris (Masters of the Camera)
Published in Hardcover by te Neues Publishing Company (December, 1998)
Authors: Eugene Atget, Wilfried Wiegand, Anne Heritage, and Wilfried Weigand
Average review score:

Nice overview--and good for history fans also
This isn't the best collection of Atget's work, but it was a great buy at the price, I thought, and the reproductions (in my copy at least) are decent. Anyone interested in history might also find it interesting to see what Paris looked like in Atget's day.
